What gun to review

Jim, @backfire I am wondering if you could do a review on a Winchester model 70.

I’d love to if I can get my hands on one!

In my experience the have ben very accurate. I have got a pre 64 model 70 in 243 win it shoots 3 shots around half an inch with federal premium 95 grain nosler ballistic tip.

I’ve been in the market for either a pre-64 or post 2006 Model 70 Super Grade in …308; or 300 WSM; Walnut Stock. i would love Jim’s review and the best place to purchase NIB of Post 2006 as it is control round feed bolt, like pre-64 but Made by F-N and assembled in Portugal. Any pros n cons welcome. i want a good hunting rifle to pass on with my '42 Model 94 3030…

What a great gun. Pre 64’s are just amazing rifles. I have one in 308 that my best friend gave me on an extended loan. The gun is magic I swear! I have made some amazing shots with this rifle. It just seems to fit me so well. I once shot a running doe at around 300 yards (give or take a few) in Pennsylvania. I seem to hit everything I shot at with this thing. My daughter used it in Montana to shoot her first buck. I rattled that buck in to 50 yards and she shot it on the run at a slow trot with one shot. It’s just magic!

I have got a pre 64 with original stock and barrel in 30-06 and it hits milk jugs consistently at 400 yards.

I don’t know if I have ever seen model 70s that have modern features like threading, flat fore-end, vertical grip and so on. The newest ones in wood stocks that I have seen at my local Bass Pro also look kind of feminine to me, with really thin barrels and fore-ends, etc. But everyone who owns one seems to love them. It’s sort of a classic styling that some folks really fall in love with. I flirted with an opportunity to buy a NIB pre-64 in 30-06 at a local gun show last fall, but ultimately I couldn’t justify it. It would just sit in my collection so I could look at it, and I didn’t think I’d ever actually use it in any practical application, because I would always want to gravitate toward something more modern when it actually came time to go shoot or hunt. But as they say: to each their own!

Well, I finally found and purchased My Model 70 Super Grade in 300 Win Mag. for 2100.00 ++ It’s a new 1983 made by FN and then sent to Portugal for Woodworks and assembly. The French walnut is perfect; 26" barrel but not threaded… She does kick like a mule even with a slip on Pachmayr Decelerator recoil pad. Next question is will I ruin the value for my son (future recipient) if i have a gunsmith thread the barrel and maybe shorten 2-4 inches for a suppressor (Banish 30 just received). Shoots a consistent 1-1/2" groups with Barnes TTSX 165 grain at 100 yds. (my indoor range limit). Went whitetail hunting in SC 2nd week in October but didn’t get blessed with a good enough buck. I’m hoping Jim will be making his new recoil pad to fit a model 70 after January. Fingers Crossed…

new 2023…I don’t know where 1983 came from???

Sounds like a great rifle. I think you’re right to shorten it and thread. It’ll be much more fun to use.

Winchester model 70 is definitely coming.
