Now that I’ve really used 1st focal plane I don’t think I’ll ever go back. I went to a long range course and everything they use is mil. Once I understood it it’s very easy to use with a mil reticle… my problem is I’m to invested in MOA on a lot of guns, and probably will stay with MOA as I don’t want to think about it when I switch back and forth between guns.
It really depends on the intended use. I’ve found that for hunting I really prefer SFP in a Leupold fire dot reticle. It’s very simple and all you’re focusing on is that dot, and the reticle is always at full size
If shooting long range, then FFP, and I like the nighforce nx8 or Vortex Razor LHT. FFP makes it a lot easier to hold over, but in a hunting situation, like I ironically had this morning, its pretty frustrating when you have an 80 yard shot and your reticle is tiny and hard to see.
I am a SFP MOA guy simply because it is all I have ever used. That being said I will be trying a new scope that is a FFP MOA scope in the near future and will see how I like it. and if it works, well I guess I am purchasing a new one, DARN!
I like non-Christmas tree FFP mil reticles for target and hunting. I have a few Christmas tree ones and I tolerate them.
I haven’t looked through one but the PR3-Mil reticle looks intriguing. I really like the way they break up the lines on the PR2 reticle so not having the clutter of the Christmas tree may be beneficial. Are we all dialing these days?
My favorite currently is the Maven SHR-Mil (FFP). It just works for me. Simple design, easier to see at lower magnification, illuminated, like the center box. There’s small changes I would have made if I was the designer, but I like it better than anything else I’ve used.
I haven’t used one yet, but I’m intrigued by the Minox ZP5 THLR reticle. It’s probably the closest we will get to a “3rd focal plane” scope. It’s busier than I would prefer, but I can see the value in how it’s designed.
Which maven scope do you have?
I have used christmas tree and clean crosshair style, both illuminated and not. The illuminated Cross (Athlon) gets really bright… so for illuminated I would go with a single point.
MOA vs MIL… both work, each have benefits. If all your buddies are shooting one of them, shoot that one. MOA is easier math for me. But I guess if you have the Backfire turret tags, you can dial easily.
I recently got to shoot long range at Branded Rock Canyon with their lineup of Nightforce scopes. Super nice scopes, but it was in the good daylight hours. I didn’t get to see the advantage of the quality glass. You get what you pay for I guess, but after a certain point what are you getting? Probably lighter weight and better low light performance, but for 90% of shooting is the budget model good enough? As the late Paul Harrell would say, You be the Judge.
I prefer FFP but the low light close range (low zoom) shooting makes it hard to see the aim point. I would rather not dial and just have DOPE on the tic marks out to my acceptable hunting range (again, you be the judge on what that actually means). For long range shooting on paper/steel, I think FFP is better.
Brand: if an alien landed on earth and wanted to learn about scopes with no biases and no concept of money, do we think they would pick the expensive brands or the budget brands? Could they tell a difference? And if they care about money, would they value the difference?
There are no solutions, just trade offs.
For those that like SFP & MOA optics for hunting, what is your go to scope? I’m looking for a scope to go on a 6.5 PRC and a 300 Win Mag.
I’m looking at these:
Nightforce NX8 2.5-20x
Leupold VX-6HD 4-24x & 3-18x
Leupold VX-5HD 4-20x & 3-15x
Any other suggestions?
I just got the VX-6HD 4-24x with the TMOA reticle today as a gift that I ordered a month ago for myself and its fantastic. Got it when it was on sale for black friday with the pro club discount for 1600
I really like the Leupold VX5 for the money. I have the vx6 illuminated and the anti cant feature is awesome! When you look through the scope and if your not level the dot is flashing until you get it level… but is that feature really worth $500+ more dollars? But if your budget shopping you can alway go to Cabelas or Sportsman’s and have them price match this sale currently going on. $699 for the duplex and $799 for the firedot, and just under 20oz. I’m hoping that Cabelas has a club discount tomorrow as I’m going to go knock on their door. As that’s cheaper then a VX3
you should really look at the STEINER H6XI, that’s what I’ve been transitioning to. The glass is really amazing and you can’t beat the price point of $1150 range for German/USA assembled scope
Leupold VX-5HD 4-20x
How far are you shooting out to?
Realistically 500 and under. But, at the range, I’d like to be able to reach out to 1k yards. Perhaps that’s a different gun/scope combo for the range.
