Hi All, I have never hunted before, and would like to start my hunting journey with an animal that is abundant in my area - Coyote. However, I have no idea what to do with a coyote carcass. I have seen people skin them, which is pretty awesome, but I’m not sure I want to deal with the hassle of tanning the hide myself. If I wanted to just get rid of the carcass would I just throw it in the trash, or bury it…? I don’t have any local tanneries by my house so I’m not quite sure what I would do with it.
If the process of tanning isn’t really that much of a hassle then I’d be more than willing to hear your perspective. I think it would actually be really cool. I just don’t really have the available facilities to accommodate for the process/stink.
Most people just shoot the coyotes and leave them there. In many areas like Utah, the state PAYS you to kill them for game management. I know a guy in another state who is hired to fly in a helicopter to shoot them every day.
I sometimes take the hide to get it tanned but it’d be very expensive to do each time and there’s no commercial value for them anymore.
I personally have a hard time throwing away a good looking hide. I have a hoist that mounts to my trailer hitch on my truck so I can lift up the coyote and skin it out. Before I bought that, I would just use a tree. Like Jim said, most people just throw them in the ditch. Some day I would like to learn to tan them, but I will have to take a course from someone so that I know what I am doing. I have been learning how to flesh them, but I need a fleshing beam to make it easier. So far, if I want them tanned, I send them out. What state are you in, Adam?
Southern California… Unfortunately. There doesn’t seem to be that much support for these kinds of things in my area. https://goldenstatetannery.com/ Is the only one I could find in California online.
