Prior to this year, I never needed to consider using a ballistics app because, when hunting, I never took a shot past ~125 yards. But I am going elk hunting in October and I am stretching out at the range so I am trying to figure out which app I should spend my time learning. Once I have my DOPE I am going to sticker my turret so I won’t have to use it while hunting.
They all can get confusing and take some learning. I shot with a guy that used applied ballistics app. You have to pay for it but it is very detailed and you can make adjusts once you learn all the specifics. Its been awesome to use.
Where are you making a elk trip to? Im going with Twinkie in October in Utah
I have used Hornady for years but am switching most things over to a Kestrel and Applied Ballistics. The Hornady app is just too buggy for serious daily use.
Geoballistics is one a lot of people like and I’m told it’s getting more regular updates now that vortex bought it.
I’ve been using 4dof. It works most of the time and recently seems like it is getting a little bit better. This last winter I had a pack of wolves howling and set up in hopes we could get them to come in. I pulled up my 4dof and it glitched so bad it was completely unusable. When I got home I had to do a total reinstall to get it to work.
I would say hands down the Geoballistics in the Vortex rangefinder. Once you get into the weeds of it you will be impressed. The geotagging future is one no one talks about. We run Kestrel and AB but it takes to long to spin up for realworld shooting. Strelok was fun but no longer can get and the 4dof is not integrated in like the Geo is. Check it out with a open mind and you will be impressed. Also I love burris and use that on my competition gun but why pay for the electronics multiple times. Get one rangefinder with your solution on display dial and shoot. Jim will you ever the GeoBallistics on your chanel?
I used Ballistic AE for the longest time and I like the user interface on it but it doesn’t get updated enough.
I recently started using GeoBallistics when I bought a Razor 4000 GB rangefinder. Im really impressed with it.
All ballistic apps take a bit of time to figure out how to use but it was fast to get up and running with GroBallistics and now they’re owned by Vortex I’m sure it’ll get updated regularly.
I’m wondering if Vortex will switch the 5000 HD over to GeoBalistics instead of the AB.
Edit: I asked their CS and their response was that they had no current plans to change the ballistics software used in the Fury. Jim mentioned getting inaccurate solutions, but in my surface internet search, I couldn’t find anyone complaining about the solutions they were getting.
You might look at Eagle Ballistics. It was created by James Eagleman who is the long-range instructor at Barbour Creek in Alabama. He is very knowledgeable, and the app is great. You have to attend his course to be able to download the detailed wind information he teaches but the rest of the app is available to everyone. Cost is $25/year.
Shooters Calculator, just google that, it will come up and easy to use on your phone. There are others but this one is free, and the data works. Good luck.
