Hi Guys,
I just joined but I have watching Jim’s channel on youtube. I am looking to purchase a long distance rifle capable of doing up to 2,000+ yards for target shooting. I am just started about a year and half ago. I am looking at three 338 Lapua Magnum rifles. 1- MPA Matrix/Matrix pro 26"-30" around $4,500 and some odd change. 2-SAKO TRG 42A 27" around $6,000-$6500 and lastly 3- Proof Reearch Thundra 26"/27" and this one you have to go through a dealer to purchase and I already got a price quote from one of the custom gun makers with rings and a khales scope for about $8,500 give or take about a hundred or two. The first two are just firearms, rings, scope, bipod… are extra. For quality long distance scopes capable of magnifying 2,000 yards plus run from around $2,500 and up from there. A few scope that I have researched are between $2,500-$4,500. So, when you select one tell me why? Give me pros and cons please. (I already have one 338 LM rifle, SAKO TRG 42 27". It is one step below TRG 42A. I bought it on Gunbroker and it came with a NF Impact 8-32/56. I bought this package at half the price of what I would have paid If I wanted to buy brand new. And the rifle I was told was shot under 100. Just FYI, I had a long discussion with Robert Vestals last year and he gave me some very valuable information regarding the “caliber” and custom-made rifles he makes for competition). A couple of other rifles I considered were Cheytac 357 M200 $12,000+, Barrett MRAD (it’s modular:you can switch barrells), and lastly Desert tech HTI (Also modular). The last three run somewhere between $13,000 to $16,000. Out of my price range. Thanks
Always curious where someone finds a safe place to shoot 2000+ yards. Where I live in Western Oregon you cannot find a place without trees that does not have a road that is even 500 yds. Not on public land anyways.
There are a handful of ranges here in outer L.A. county that have ranges of that length, but you have to drive a couple of hours. One thing we don’t have to worry about down here are the “trees.” ![]()
I am in the desert, next to China Lake Naval Station, and our local range has a 600 yard you can do which is not bad.
Nice. I worked at China Lake for 4 yrs many years ago. First engineering job out of college in 1986! Back then I was more into chukar and quail vs rifle shooting. I stayed in shape climbing B mountain at lunch every day.
Some incredible guns you’ve suggested but they are all quite different. I wouldn’t choose a Proof Tundra for this application as it’s more of a hunting rifle and you’d want something heavier.
I might pick something like an HS Precision Pro or Tactical rifle in 300 PRC.
Thanks Jim. I looked them up. They are also priced high, but not as bad as the ones I mentioned. The PR THUNDRA is going to be for hunting. light weight compared to everything else I have. Did you see Fierce has a limited edition MTN REAPER. Edition of only 25 in two different colors each. RED is sold out, but they have a few grays left @$6695 fully “loaded.” I know you liked their Rogue model for being lightweight. I watched your video. I really liked your scope review videos.
Then you know how hot it gets down here.
Ah, okay. I thought you were looking for a 2,000 yard TARGET rifle. But you want it to do dual-purpose and also work for hunting? Is that essentially what you’re looking for?
Yes, if I can find dual purpose it would be great and save money. That is why I looked at PR THUNDRA.
Ok. A few I might consider would be Fierce Reaper, Gunwerks Nexus, HS Precision Light Hunter.
The Proof Tundra also looks great. Looks like a very sleek stock for real long range work but I’m sure it’ll be very accurate.
Thanks for the suggestions. Looked them up, and really like Gunwerks NEXUS. iT is modular with interchangeable barrells. I did a configuration with 300 PRC 24" & 14+ length of pull and the price came out to $6,075 just for the rifle (I wonder how much they are going to charge for additional barrell? Ex: DT HTI is also a modular system and any additional caliber barrell they charge $2,800
)I got a price quote from Evolved Ballistic (Texas) for the PR Thundra 26" 338 LM fully configured with everything you could think of for between $9k & $10K. So, I imagine Nexus fully configured most likely will be over $10k (It is a rarity that they have a rifle that starts under $10k on their website.
I am going to add it to my list of rifles to acquire.
