Whitetail Hunting

Looking to maybe change up what I shoot because it’s getting real hard to find Nosler Partitions. Shooting a 308 this year. Any recommendations? I’m wanting to keep the cost per box under the cost of the noslers so nothing more expensive than those. I would actually like to go cheaper. Shots will be no more than 400 yards.

I mostly use Hornady Precision Hunter ammo. That’s save you about $22 per box, give you a much high BC to fly flat and resist wind, and will expand a bit better for whitetail that have smaller bodies.

Alright I may give them a try. I haven’t heavily considered them because I have mostly read/heard people talking about ELD-X ammo for long range. One bullet I was looking into was Federal Trophy Copper.

No personal experience with the federal trophy copper. However Federal does load Barnes ttsx bullets and I’ve had great success with them. In fact, the federal loading of the Barnes bullet typically has better accuracy than the Barnes loading of their bullet.

Looking at ammoseek the price is similar if not cheaper than partitions. However I’m also seeing a good bit of partitions available if you want to stick with that load.

ELD-X is actually good for both close and long-range shots–it’s one if the selling points really; I remember first hearing about it on a vortex nation podcast where they interviewed a ballistician from Hornady and they described the process of finding that balance and how they did it, it was pretty cool.

One note: I have one gun that will not work with precision hunter/ELD-X; for some reason the action just cannot close when chambering. But it is the only gun I have that seems to have this issue (Henry Long Ranger).

I have heard about Barnes TSX. People seem to talk them up. Partitions do a great job, best I have saw as far as leaving a blood trail but the cost has just got real high on them. Haven’t had to buy partitions in a few years. I know all ammo has gone up but man it’s reaching a point where I asked myself if it was cheaper to just go buy the cow lol!

Okay man. Thanks for the tip. Might have to try it out.

I’d like to see how the Terminal ascent performs.

They say it has the open at any velocity like the ELD-X has, but stays together better.

No experience with however.

The federal noslers aren’t that much more than the Hornady outfitters. At least not in my area. I may try them out though.
