Why have magazines gotten so big?

What on earth is causing the gun industry to come out with these massive magazines on hunting rifles? Some of these things are protruding 3+ inches out of the bottom and can have a rattle.

I get that some of the PRC’s are shorter and fatter, but if you can get 4 rounds of 300 WM to sit flush in the Sako 90, why can’t you get at least 3 and flush on these other factory rifles?

I guess as a side thought, has single stack vs double stack magazine made a difference in feeding or been a contributing factor?

I really don’t get it at all, anyone have insight?

Yeah, some have gotten pretty huge. I feel like three rounds in a magazine is great for me in a hunting scenario.

Perhaps they are trying to appeal to the people who are more into competitive shooting? I say that as a person who’s never done any type of competitive shooting.

I don’t think single feed stack necessarily feed better than double stack. Both the Tikka CTR mags and Sako mags are double stack and they are some of the smoothest mags you can find. Maybe the trend for bigger mags might stem from more chassis style rifles being used for hunting?

My 7PRC has a single stack and I think it could be double, which I would prefer. However, when I have had problems with mags feeding, they’ve been double. Maybe that’s why, single to avoid feeding problems.

I think gun makers are going for a cooler tachtical look rather a functional rifle.
