Why Won't These Ballistics Myths Die?

So you wondered why AR rifles can’t shoot as accurate as bolt guns.

This is my Seekins Precision SP-10 in .308. The best ammo I have found is the Black Hills .308 Win Match 168 gr Tipped MatchKing.

This target was shot at 100 yards, 12 rounds shot 1 shot per second.

Not bad for an AR

I have a .223 AR with a Wylde barrel that shoot 1/2 minute grps at 100. This is my only non subsonic AR so I really didn’t know that this isn’t normal. It was a cheapo build from PSA (minus the upgraded BCG). I think in total the rifle set me back between $450-$500, scope not included.

Similarly, I have a build also from PSA in .223 Wylde, with upgraded BCG and 18" barrel that shoots 1 MOA. Mine was more like $600 not including scope.

I have a Fierce Sidewinder in .223 Wylde and shoot steel with it a 520 yards

ARs can shoot extremely well, as evidenced by your group photo. The reputation comes from the design of ARs or other semi-autos being primarily modifed military designs for civilians. Military weapons are designed to function under any condition; so if dirt, mud, rust, ice, water, anything gets into the bolt carrier group and upper receiver area, it will still fire when needed. Functionality in field conditions is a higher priority than pin point accuracy. The machining tolerences are opened up so there is space to accomodate debris, etc. and allow the weapon to operate. I cant think of the AR custom maker, and believe he is out of business now, but 15 years ago there was a custome AR builder that guaranteed .5 groups with his weapons. Got my hands on one a buddy of mine bought, and it would produce outstanding groups.
The generous tolerances is one reason the AK47 is regarded as being probably the most reliable automatic weapon every produced. They simply do not fail to fire under any condition, including a total lack of maintenance on the part of the individual carrying it. I think it is CMMG that makes another very accuracte AR platform and I have almost grabbed one, but I sold all my black rifles and now only shoot bolts; to date I have resisted the urge to go back to the semi’s. Nice rifles though in your pictures.

Good point. If I recall, the mil-spec accuracy requirement for the M4 is 2.5" group at 100 yards.

Thanks! Those may not be an accurate comparison to most AR style guns though since they are more expensive than most bolt guns Seekins and Fierce.
