A friend and myself are looking to go Antelope hunting in Wyoming next year or at a minimum start building preference points. I’m looking at GoHunt and the theme seems to be public access is difficult, but there are several units in the SE part of the state that have decent access and public land. We may have to pay the extra $800 for the special permit to have a chance. Anybody have areas/units you recommend or areas to stay away from?
Coming from AR, so the SE Wyoming is optimal, but not necessary.
We are really just looking to go out west and hunt some big game. Antelope have been on my punch list for a while, but I’m not against doing something else.
I’m looking at units as well for this year, but I’ll have 5 points.
Two things to watch for. (1) Recently, many units had the same odds for the more expensive special tag as the regular draw. Enough people were willing to pony up the extra money that it ended up not even being an advantage. Just watch out for that.
(2) watch for wilderness areas where you have to have a guide or a Wyoming resident with you.
Thanks. I noticed the wilderness areas on GoHunt, but didn’t realize you had to have a guide or resident. Pretty sure I was looking at an area with good access to wilderness. Good info!
Choose carefully, we have hunted successfully in Unit 1, far NE corner, and in one of the south central units. My crew attempted to hunt unit 26 one year & the residents & game wardens were actively hassling & threatening them.
The checkerboard public / private land thing is bad in the west, but it seems to me to be particularly bad in WY. Curious to see what the recent corner crossing case “victory” does, if anything, to allow the public true access the “public land” out west.
Good luck to you guys. I love Wyoming, antelope hunting, love the taste of them, love everything about it, but, because of the land thing, may not ever go again.
Thanks for the info. Unit 1 is actually one the units we are looking at. GoHunt has some positive things to say about access and the ability to cover land. Any issues with this unit, tons of pressure, etc? What year did you hunt unit 1?
It was average all the way around, a long way from Texas, which probably bodes well for those who hunt it. Really nice game warden, I liked the country.
Carey, did you decide on a unit? I’m starting to get the itch again & the corner crossing issue appears to be trending our way.
The south central unit we hunted in the 2022 season was unit 21. All 5 hunters tagged out & I really enjoyed that unit & hunt. Gohunt has the odds for drawing way down for 21, in fact, the odds don’t appear to be very good for any unit unless it is mostly private land.
