I seen the video Jim did about the 7prc and the box velos not matching up, will it get resolved? Is it enough reason one shouldn’t get a 7 prc until figured out? What will come of this?
we have couple threads started on this subject. I would search for those as a starting point. I do not know how to point to them in this tool. Search for 7mm PRC what now?
I’m frustrated that Hornady would switch powders with ZERO transparency. That means someone may spend $120 on two boxes to get sighted in and figure out their dope, go to the store to buy another box, and suddenly their gun is way off. Then they have to buy more boxes to get it dialed again.
Not okay with me. I’m switching almost entirely to reloading.
But, it’s also common in the factory ammo space. This is a REALLY BAD example, but it’s common. So a different cartridge may face the same problem.
I know the velocity issues can mostly be fixed by hand loading and at least get you somewhere close to 3,000, but what do you think is causing the accuracy issues?
I’m pretty close to starting on my custom build for elk hunts and having a heck of a time deciding between 7 RM, 7 PRC, and 300 WM.
What powder and load data are you using Jim?
Trying a few. Reloder 26, H1000, Retumbo, H4831sc. Haven’t found a winner yet.
Links below to a couple of the other threads on this subject.
so nice that he went to all that effort. But…. a few points.
- not going to buy a lifetime of ammo
at one time even if I could find enough boxes. 20 boxes of ammo costs me $1200 which is a lot to plunk down. - Hornady response says oops sorry - but oops is not good enough. Transparency is the key. I do not know how or if they test lots or not but they certainly know the truth and as such should print it on the box. Truth in advertising and all that. If they can real time print a lot number they can real time print the velocity table even they would not want to.
- I think 100 fps is important. Not as much as SD but still you want to know. And how many people really expect this from something with what should be a very consistent type of product? Lots of people do not have chronos or shoot more than a couple times a year if at all once they feel zeroed.
- How do I know what lot the powder change was made. I have 10 boxes gathered as found over the last year. I guess I could shoot from each box and see. Got a box of Outfitter 160 last weekend and will give that a go. But only one $60 box.
Yes I am going to start reloading it but powder is a thing as well as primers. I have some H4831SC to try. But I have know idea how that will perform as only one powder choice in my rifle.
Customer faith in your product is important. Brand loyalty is a real thing. You are a Chevy owner because your father had a problem with a Ford 50 yrs ago. We all have brand biases - why give a customer a reason to have one? If they are not honest this time - what else are they not honest on? Do I have to weigh all my Hornady bullets now if I am reloading because they are short of lead and are adding some zinc and makes it lighter?
Yeah, when he first started reading that response from Hornady I thought for a minute they were going to completely duck.
Imagine how much of a non-story this would be if they had just come out when they discovered the problem with a press release, YouTube video, Etc. The number of Internet videos, Internet posts, Etc regarding this is significant. It would be easy for people to start making assumptions that are completely Incorrect and posting that on YouTube which then will catch on like fire and given hornadys lack of response, they would have really been behind the eight ball trying to Snuff out the untruths.
Yep. My box of CX 160’s says 3000 fps. So I would have expected a 160 to be faster than a 175. I don’t think being copper makes a pressure difference though I do not know. A reason why this would be so? assuming they are trying to load for as much velocity as they can within the pressure specs.
