A photo of the upcoming Backlight chassis

This isn’t finished by any means. The metal isn’t cerakoted yet, no laser cut foam on the cheek piece, and the carbon fiber grip stuck in the mould so it looks rough. But this is the first actual photo I’m sharing of the chassis. Please don’t share this outside Backfire Plus.

Would love any honest thoughts and opinions.

Looks great! Can’t wait to get my hands on one.

Grateful you are bringing more options to the hunting/shooting community, especially at the price point. It looks like it’s bringing a lot of the modern features and function that a lot of stocks/chassis are lacking. I got a whole slew of questions, feels free to answer or ignore any of these

  1. How will the user adjust the LoP? Is this picture in the shortest setting? Any concern about a weak point being created when using the longest LoP setting?

  2. Does the check piece adjust as well or will it be stationary? If it adjusts, how is that done?

  3. This is more out of curiosity, for the butt/back end of the stock, is the carbon fiber for structure/rigidity, weight/balance, purely aesthetics, or was the intent to have these parts cut out initially?

  4. Any concern about the folding hinge holding up to higher recoiling cartridges? I know you’ve reworked this to be up to your own standard of quality, was there an indicator or when a hinge may need replacing? I have this (probably irrational) fear that it’s not going to be locked in or break and I’ll take a recoiling rifle to the face.

  5. How will the user lock/unlock the folding hinge? Is it something that can be jostled easily hiking around?

  6. Has the grip been tested for a range of hand sizes? For both trigger reach and vertical length so I don’t have fingers hanging off the end.

  7. Where the stage saver sits, is that carbon fiber or metal? I’m wondering if this could be turned into some kind of magnetic attachment.

  8. For the front of the stock, halfway down It starts wrapping all the way around instead of continuing the typical half pipe barrel channel. Can you walk us through that? Is something supposed to be attachable up top? Any concern about this being enclosed? Is it going to get in the way of gunsmiths doing work?

  9. What is the shortest barrel the chassis will be able to accommodate? Any concerns about short barrels being able to utilize a suppressor with the current design?

  10. I’ve seen the longer arcs rails on a few rifles now. Is there an advantage to this over just having like a trinity rail in front of the magazine?

1 To save weight, the posts of the cheek piece come down into the holes in the back bar to set the length of pull. We have been conservative on the longest setting to make sure it’s strong.

2 Cheek piece is adjustable. There are two set screws like on the mdt Hnt26.

3 The butt stock was too heavy without the carbon fiber sides. Helps us get to our target weight.

4 I can’t really imagine the folding mechanism collapsing under recoil. When you see it up close I think you’ll see what I mean. There’s a huge metal lever that locks it in place.

5 There’s a simple lever you press to unlock. We are still working through the unlock. That could change.

6 Originally the grip was a lot fatter. I had a bunch of people try it and we got much skinnier. I thought I’d hate it but I actually like it better too. Feels like a hybrid of an AR grip and a compound bow grip.

7 The middle piece where the action sits is a carbon fiber/nylon 11 blend. It’s really an INCREDIBLE material. Lightweight, stiff as a brick, durable… and really expensive but it’s worth it.

8 The full wrap handguard is functional but also just gives a cool look. It does help quite a bit to reduce mirage off the barrel since the front of the barrel produces the most mirage. It also gives mlok attachments up top if you want to use a clip on thermal or some other accessory like a chrono on a side bar. There is a channel for the scope and also so the barrel can be installed without taking the handguard on and off. Works great.

9 No issues with short barrels. The carbon fiber handguard is only 12” so it’ll handle anything since the very shortest barrels are 16”.

10 Full length arca is phenomenal because it allows the shooter to move the bipod forward and back to gain or lose height when shooting on an angle. Also good for attaching to a tripod. However, arca bipods can work lose during heavy recoil so we also built in some picatinny as a really strong attachment for the magnums.

Thanks for indulging me on all the questions! Really think it’s going to do extremely well and disrupt the market in a very good way!

Very nice!!!:+1:t2:

Love the built in bag rider. Also love the the folding piece is built in as opposed to being an option. I know you said LOP starts at 12 1/2, I don’t know of another folder that is below 13” so that is really great for me.

what the weight?

Is the grip hollow? If yes, any thought to a foam fill? Would add a bit of strength to a weak spot (if hollow like the Ultradyne)?

What’s the purpose of the hook in the hand guard? It looks like it could be made straight which would roughly match the angle of the grip and would act as a good place to put your off hand when in the prone position without rear bags. Also the angled lines on the butt stock don’t line up with each other I assume for structural reasons but I can’t unsee it now. Also would be good to round the back of the trigger guard off to blend it into the grip a bit. Hope that’s some food for thought, it’s looking great. I bet you can’t wait to shoot out of it

Yeah, the fat bag rider was a must for me. Really helps to keep the rifle stable when shooting.

The grip is carbon fiber so it’ll be super strong. It has to be hollow in order to get the screw through the bottom.

Great ideas. I’m going to have that change to the trigger guard made tomorrow. I think you’re right on that.

The purpose of the hook is so you can pull the rear of the rifle into your shoulder while shooting. Really feels nice.

Hard to imagine without actually sitting behind it but I’m assuming your hand sits on the 45° bit. I thought closer to straight up and down would let you pull squarer and be a more natural position for your hand, similar to a pistol grip. But being able to pull it into your shoulder will be great

I believe you said that the first run will be for Remington and Tikka actions. Do you have an estimate on how long I’ll have to wait to get one for my Savage Ultralite?

I think its great except the esthetics of the buttstock. The carbon fiber panels make it look chunky. Id imagine they cover the cheek riser and LOP mechanisms. Maybe a contrasting color logo or design on the panel, or holder for a dope card? Its not a dealbreaker for me. Cant wait to get one!

Looks great can’t wait to order one!

Some ideas to run by you

Have you thought about adding qd on the sides of the chassis and butt stock? Does the arc go all the way to the mag well? Worried about balance?

Standing by w/credit card in one hand and a 7mm-08 Tikka in the other

Hoping on being in on Beta testing 3 chassis in the waiting 6.5 Prc Tikka, 7 Prc Tikka and 270 Howa working on before data now I think where going to have some fun so this puppy better cut the mustard “ just supportive members wants you do good

I just realized the mouse pad want part of it. Much better without that bulk!
