My mom likes to go deer hunting with me and my dad but she has really bad joint pain in her shoulders. She shot her first deer last year with a 6.5 creedmoor and the next day she said her shoulder was sore. Can anyone recommend a lighter recoil deer rifle?
Depends on what kind of deer you are talking about. If you are talking about small eastern whitetail at ranges less than say 300yds then a 22-250 will take them down no problem. Its what i use and its quite popular here in the south east because the deer are small and the ranges are short. Its also what my 100lb girls shoot.
I was thinking about getting a 22 creedmoor but I don’t know of any factory rifles chambered in it.
350 legend. 8 felt pounds of recoil. With a suppressor cut that by about 35 %. It will kill effectively out to 200 yards. My daughter shot this giant doe last year with it. One shot at 100 yards and a
40 yard death run.
I’m not very big on the 350 legend I would like to get a gun I can still shot at range just playing around plus I reload and I hate reloading straight walled cartridges.
What about trying subsonic rounds with supressor. Will decrease recoil
I would do that but she is a pretty novice shooter and with subsonic rounds the bullet drops to fast and she won’t know how to compensate for it.
Maybe 6 creedmore, or if your using a blind maybe a tripod with bog or arcs Swiss attachment will divert some recoil into tripod
If you hunt at pretty close ranges the first thing that comes to mind is 300blk. If you are going long range 6mm creedmoor, 22-250 might be two of your best options. It also depends on whether or not you reload.
Adding a good suppressor or break can help a lot as well.
Agree with the 22-250 recommendations.
The other thing you could consider is a muzzle brake or suppressor, and a lighter weight bullet like a copper in a reduced powder load. You could probably cut 6.5 creedmoor down to basically zero recoil with those changes.
Thanks Jim and the rest of you guys. I guess I’m going with a 22-250 tikka t3x
If you see 6mm ARC, think about it.
I actually was thinking about that. Who all chambers 6 arc in a factory rifle? I know ruger and savage but I’m not a fan of either one of those.
Another big thing I would recommend especially going with a Tikka would be to immediately take off their factory recoil pad and throw on a limbsaver instead. Makes a drastic difference! My T3x is a lot more pleasant to shoot once I did that
I will for sure do that. I will probably change the stock in the future anyway.
Try Howa. I hear they are good
Howl’s are nice but I think I’ll stick with the tikka just in case I want to build on it later.
Well the 243 or 6mm rem are great Deer rifles.
Recoil is just a bit lighter than the 6.5 CM
But I’ll tell you I found the best recoil pad ever!
Falcon Strike recoil pads are hydraulic.
( oil filled ). Your feel the push But No PAIN !!
I put one on my 7mm mag after 18 rounds I could have kept shooting.
Absolutely no pain.
I am not affiliated with the company.
Just happy to find a great product.
Check the reviews.
And the company is great to deal with.
Good customer service.
Oh I replaced my limb saver with it.
They are expensive but worth it !
Good luck
Just to let you know. I also put a Falcon Strike on my SB3 12 gauge and just ordered one for my Savage Axis in 30-06 for my wife.
I have a 22-250 it’s an awesome little cartridge
Absolutely great for coyotes. And long range Gophers
With proper bullets and shot placement 200 yards maybe out farther . On Deer
Up here in Canada you can not hunt Big Game with a cartridge smaller than 23 calibre. So the 22-250 is out.
And what if the 170 class Whitetail of your Dreams steps out at 300 plus ?
You need a little more punch.
Cheers
22 Creedmoor is a cartridge i want to learn more about.
