A few weeks back, I decided I wanted a new rifle, for hunting and eventually PRS…
After researching a lot of options (build vs. buy, cartridge choices & budget), I chose to buy a Sako S20 Precision in 7 Rem Mag.
Added a 20MOA pic rail to the built-in pic rail along with 30mm low rings and an Athlon Ares BTR Gen2 HD 4.5-27x50 scope, a 9-slot M-LOK MagPul pic rail and an Atlas BT65-LW17 bipod.
So far, I am extremely happy with my choice! Zero’d the rifle at 200 yds (personal preference). Visiting my Mom in Phoenix this week, I went to the Ben Avery Shooting Facility and checked grouping…
At 100yds, holding dead center, I had a 5-shot group that was <.5” MOA!
Thanks Jim! The initial sighting-in was a pain (my own fault, I tried to shortcut the process, knowing the potiential pitfauls), but once sighted in, the rifle is VERY accurate!
I intentionally was aiming for the same point and not holding/adjusting for wind, as I wanted all 5 shots to group accurately…
I also liked the “hunter” stock, which I am in the process of buying, so I can easily swap out…based on need.
I have both stocks for my S20’s but the precision stock is more comfortable for me. That may not be the case for everyone.my 6.5 shoots like a dream with 130 gamechanger bullets, but like i said i am getting ready to start working on load development for the 7mm.
Actually, I mis-stated the weight. Just was perusing pics on my smartphone and found a pic I had taken with the scope & bipod mounted. So this weight is nearly fully loaded, just an empty magazine. (note: I also have the muzzle break installed vice just the 5/8x24 thread cover):
Weight: 9 lbs 14.7 oz.
That is pretty good IMO; my Remington 700 (.308) is not much lighter. LOL
That’s all that matters my friend sako makes an awesome rifle. With a history of smooth action and repeatable accuracy. I bought a savage high country couple years ago 8.5 lbs. nice rifle, good price, shoots great. Loaded up was nearly 11 lbs and lugging it around Idaho mountains was rough. That being said I am no spring chicken anymore. I started looking for sub 7 lbs rifles after that lol. I do love the fact it is modular though able to go from hunter to prs that is pretty sweet.
Spring chicken? I totally feel that…(approaching the six decade mark). I still hike & snowshoe here in Colorado as much as I can for my photography (landscape & nature www.USKestrel.com), but I don’t do anywhere near the distances I used to do. My knees mostly, get pretty annoyed after about 10 miles, so I plan accordingly (either 10 miles out with a good break in between OR a 10 mile out & back).
Hunting has never been any long distance (fortunately, as I have a few places where it’s kind of a choke point. My 'ol Remington 700 has been good, but never allowed me to get a good shot off.
I missed the damn window for Fall 2023 (was preoccupied with some other work crap), but will try to get a tag through other means.
